Lawyer Harry N. MacLean is author of many best selling true crime novels including "In Broad Daylight" about Ken Rex McElroy who terrorized northwest Missouri for over twenty years before he was finally shot to death on the main street of Skidmore, Missouri, in July 1981. Despite 45 witnesses to the killing, no one has ever been indicted for his murder. The movie, starring Brian Denehey as McElroy and Marcia Gay Hardin as his wife; is based on Harry's Edgar Award winning and bestselling book.
Following the movie is a presentation by MacLean given June 4, 2024 at the History Nebraska center about Charlie Starkweather, the first mass murderer of the modern age and the subject of MacLean's most recent novel "Starkweather". The Starkweather saga was also the inspiration for the movie "Badlands" and Bruce Springsteen's album "Nebraska." In 1958 Charlie and his companion, 14-year-old Caril Fugate, went on a bloody rampage through Nebraska and Wyoming, killing ten people. Charlie was executed in 1959 and Caril spent 14 years in prison.
