If you're of a certain age, you remember the fear that spread across the West with Charlie Starkweather's killing spree in the 1950s.
Charlie was America's first mass murderer, and the question was always did his 13-year-old girlfriend, Carol Ann Fugate, willingly participate in the killings, or was she forced to accompany him? Colorado author Harry MacLean has done significant research into Starkweather and Fugate. He incorporates his own personal story into his nonfiction work. Harry's brother was a schoolmate of Charlie's.
