The Story Behind “In Broad Daylight” Publisher's Summary
Standing a few feet from where the killers opened fire on Ken Rex McElroy more than three decade ago, Harry N. MacLean tells the story of how he came to write his Edgar Award-winning book In Broad Daylight in his new true crime short, The Story Behind 'In Broad Daylight' MacLean had doors slammed in his face, guns pulled on him, and was bitten by a dog. Eventually, he won over the closed community of Skidmore, Mo. The inhabitants shared with him the reign of terror Ken Rex McElroy inflicted for twenty years in Northwest Missouri, and information about his murder on the main street of Skidmore in 1981. The Story Behind 'In Broad Daylight' brings the book up to date. It also answers many questions about the killing itself, such as who was involved, and what has become of them. The author discusses the nature of the moral consequences of the killing for the town and those involved in the killing. MacLean describes the breakthrough events when key characters agreed to speak with him, and he realized he would finally get the story. In Broad Daylight was a New York Times best seller for 12 weeks and was made into a movie starring Brian Denehey, Cloris Leachman and Chris Cooper.
“The riveting backstory of MacLean's true crime classic...a can't miss read.” (Kathryn Casey, author of Deadly Little Secrets.)
“The Story Behind In Broad Daylight:" ;A riveting behind the scenes look at an author in pursuit of the story about the bully who brought down a town and paid for his sins with his life.” (Diane Fanning, author of Mommy Little Girls.)
Amazing
It's amazing to see how much dedication went into making In Broad Daylight. This book has some really interesting stories I'm surprised were left out of In Broad Daylight. I loved this book and just wished it was longer. - Orion X.
A great behind the scenes look
After "In Broad Daylight", I just had to get this book. I feel like I have been to Skidmore though I never have. I'm looking forward to getting more of Harry Maclean's books. Dave Clark does a fantastic job narrating. - Greg J.
A must listen
A must if you liked the book. Very well told story and great narrator. 5/5 - Anonymous
Good to see updates and new information
I think the book is well written. I find it hard t believe that the bowenkamp step daughter, said right after the shooting someone looked in the store, and said it was over. She never was able to name who the person was that asked her to stand behind them. The law failed these people. - Lencho C.
There will not be any better written about this matter. - Pastor L.
