Starkweather's Youngest Victim

Betty Jean, Caril Fugate's two-and-a-half year old sister. Starkweather claimed Caril watched as he threw a knife into her throat and bashed her head in with a rifle butt. And that both of them afterwards spent the night watching TV. If true, this would make Caril into a monster beyond description.

   Caril denied witnessing the murder, and all the evidence shows that Caril loved Betty Jean and vice versa. Little wonder then that she sat stone-faced and frozen in the courtroom while listening to Charlie describe the killing on the stand. She was described in the newspapers of being cold and remorseless. She was guilty before the trial even began.
